Facility offers affordable living and supportive health to Winnipeg seniors
Ellice Place, a seniors facility that combines social housing and assisted living for seniors has completed an $11 million renovation. The project was he brain child of the Selinger NDP government and was first announced in November of 2015.
“This is an important project for the community. There are a growing number of seniors with a moderate income who want to live independently but need supports to make that possible,” said Families Minister Scott Fielding. “Today’s grand opening at Ellice Place is a special day for Winnipeg’s West End and for the seniors who will soon call this welcoming place their home.”
The facility boasts 118 studio and one bedroom apartments, five of which are fully accessible for individuals with disabilities. Situated at 555 Ellice Avenue it is in the heart of the downtown area with easy access to transit. Each suite has medical alarms and the building has a number of common areas including a kitchen for communal baking and cooking activities, a dining hall with daily meal service, recreation room and outdoor patios.
Réal Cloutier, chief operating officer, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said, “This creative model, which places affordable housing and supportive health in one location, is an example of how the public sector can work together to meet the needs of seniors in our community.”
Rents at Ellice Place are based on income plus the cost of a service package that will include two hot meals daily, linen service, light housekeeping and recreational activities.
