The new regional hospital in Selkirk had its grand opening on Thursday, September 14, 2017
Local and provincial dignitaries celebrated the opening with a ceremony at the new facility.
“The new Selkirk Regional Health Centre better accommodates residents’ health-care needs and the delivery of health-care services in the region,” said Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Kelvin Goertzen.
The more than 180,000 square foot facility is twice as big as the previous hospital and has an additional 12 beds. Most of the rooms are single-bed to improve safety, comfort and privacy for patients. In the old hospital most of the rooms had multiple beds.
Construction of the facility began in 2014 and was completed this year. Patients began moving to the facility on June 25, 2017. The hospital is bright with more than 17,000 square feet of windows. It also has the regions first MRI and improved birthing facilities. Improved facilities for dialysis and chemotherapy have also been included in the construction.

According to the CEO Ron Van Denakker of the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority the new Health Centre a focal point across the region that will establish a clinical training unit to help educate healthcare professionals in the future. “Teaching units like this are key to attracting new graduates to the region as well as health-care professionals who want to be mentors,” said Van Denakker.
