The effects of poverty on education and how to improve outcomes is the focus of a task force established today by the provincial government.
The Provincial Task Force on Poverty and Education is intended to examine how poverty impacts school outcomes for students, and also bring forward ideas for action to address the bigger socio-economic picture.
It’s 20 members come from a wide range of perspectives and experience and includes students, parents, teachers, school leaders, Indigenous representatives and organizations, and other community experts.
The province says the task force will start by focusing on issues like access to food and food security; access to technology, transportation and other socio-economic barriers to participation in education; and outcomes and continuity of education for children in care.
They are to look for system wide best practices and solutions, reporting back with their initial learnings in mid-2022.
