Formal Letter Outlines Expectations
The city’s mayor has handed the new chair of the Winnipeg Police Board, David Asper, his mandate.
In a formal letter, the new chair is told to expect intense scrutiny and strong accountability while serving as an important liaison between the community and the police service. He’s also been told to expect the work to become more challenging as the city works on budgetary issues.
Last November, the city adopted the practice of providing mandate letters utlining key responsibilities and expectations to people serving in various leadership roles, including the chairs of city council’s six standing policy committees and councillors serving as deputy mayor and acting deputy mayor.
“Mandate letters are an effective way to publicly outline expectations of those serving in leadership roles, as well as provide them with the direction necessary to fulfill their responsibilities,” said Mayor Bowman.
Winnipeg’s city council approved Asper’s appointment earlier this week. The board’s formal mandate is to provide civilian governance respecting the enforcement of law, the maintenance of the public peace and the prevention of crime in the City of Winnipeg, and to provide the administrative direction and organization required to provide an adequate and effective police service in the city.
