New Manitoba Hydro generating station produces first power

Manitoba Hydro announced that the first unit at the Keeyask Generating Station came online on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, and is now providing power to the grid.

Construction began in 2014 on the Nelson River in northern Manitoba. The 695-megawatt station will have seven units online producing 4,400 gigawatt hours of electricity annually. when construction of the 8.7 billion project is complete.

The unit that is now online is six months ahead of schedule. The remaining six units will be brought online one by one over the next year.

“First power from Keeyask builds on Manitoba Hydro’s enviable position in the low carbon world of the future,” said Jay Grewal, Manitoba Hydro’s President & CEO. “Nearly 98 per cent of our electricity is already generated using clean, renewable, and virtually carbon-free hydropower – a huge advantage for our province as North America moves to reduce carbon emissions.

The mega project is a collaboration between Manitoba Hydro and Keeyask Hydropower Limited partnership made up of four First Nations – Tataskweyak Cree Nation, War Lake First Nation, York Factory First Nation and Fox Lake Cree Nation.
