Winnipeg Transit will have the new emergency signal system operational on all buses by the middle of next week (Dec 15).
The new system will allow bus drivers to alert the public outside the bus of an emergency situation within and request help from the public to alert police. At the same time the system will alert the transit control centre of the issue.
Electronic boards on the bus that usually provide route information will flash “Emergency Call 911” and “Do Not Board Bus” when the system has been activated.
“This investment represents the latest in a series of transit safety initiatives assisted by collaboration with the Transit Advisory Committee, continuing to demonstrate our commitment to a safe, pleasant, and effective public transportation system,” said Matt Allard, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure, Renewal and Public Works.
The cost to outfit all of the city owned transit buses is $9,100.
