Multiple Sunday night fires under investigation

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a number of structure fires Sunday night, April 5, 2020, across the city.

HELMSDALE AVENUE

Just before 8:30 pm crews were called to a two-and-a-half storey home on Helmsdale Avenue.

When firefighters arrived they encountered heavy smoke coming from an outside wall of the building.

Firefighters opened the wall and roof in order to access the fire.

The home was under renovations at the time of the blaze all occupants were able to self-evacuate before firefighters arrived.

ASHBURN STREET

A few minutes after 9:00 pm firefighters responded to a one-and-a-half-storey home on Ashburn Street.

As firefighters arrived they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. An offensive attack was launched but as conditions deteriorated fire crews were forced outside and continued to fight the fire with a defensive attack.

Everyone inside the home were able to get out before firefighters arrived on scene.

Two neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials expect to be on scene into the early morning hours.

CARLTON STREET

Just before 10:30 pm firefighters were call on to battle a blaze for the third time in under two hours after a fire was reported in a 10-storey apartment block on Carlton Avenue south of Broadway.

Fire officials called a second alarm in order to get additional crews and equipment on scene due to the potential for a high number of occupants in the building.

As firefighters entered the building they encountered smoke. The fire was under control within 40 minutes and the blaze was contained to a single suite.

One person was assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

All three fires are under investigation.
