Firearms a factor in several arrests last week

Winnipeg police made seven arrests and seized five firearms in three different incident last week.

Cathedral Avenue

On Tuesday August 20, 2019, around 8:45 pm, police were called to an apartment building in the 100 block of Cathedral Avenue for the report of two males with guns.

According to police on of the males had pointed a gun at a person they knew while the second male also armed himself with a second firearm. The people in the suite fled while the two armed suspects stole property before leaving the apartment.

Four hours later, around 1:00 am on August 21, 2019, a pizza delivery driver was robbed by two males in the 300 block of Blake Street. One of the males was armed with a can of bear spray. Both suspects got away before police arrived on scene.

The Major Crimes Unit investigated and on Friday August 23, 2019, investigators along with members of the Tactical Support Team executed search warrant at an apartment in the 300 block of Blake Street. Two males were arrested and officers seized a sawed-off .22 calibre rifle.

An 18 year-old male and a 19-year-old male are both facing armed robbery and weapons-related charges. Both were detained in custody.

McGee Street Incident

On August 23, 2019 police responded to reports of shots fired just before 3:00 am in the area of the 400 block of Victor Street.

When officers arrived on scene that located a vehicle in the 400 block of McGee Street and took four occupants into custody. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded sawed-off .22 calibre rifle and a sawed-off 12 gauge shotgun.

Police also found a nearby home on McGee had multiple gunshots fired into it. Police did not find anyone inside the home.

Further investigation by the Major Crimes Unit indicated that at least on of the people who had been arrested was inside the home at the time of the incident. Police say that the weapons seized did not match ballistic evidence recovered at the scene.

A 37-year-old male, a 21 year-old male along with two male youth, age 16 and 17 were charged with a number of weapons related offences. All four were detained in custody.

Cumberland Avenue and Spence Street

On Saturday August 24, 2019 police were patrolling near Cumberland Avenue and Spence Street around 10:30 am when they passed by a group of males in front of a home covered with several gang-related graffiti tags.

As the officers drove by they noticed the stock of a firearm sticking out of a backpack worn by one of the males. When the officers stopped to investigate the group ran in different directions. The officers chased the male with the backpack and placed him under arrest.

Inside the backpack officers found a loaded .38 calibre rifle, a sawed-off .22 calibre as well as an airlift pellet gun.

A 31-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing eight firearms-related charges. He was detained in custody.
