Cruise night chase leads to criminal charges for motorcyclist

Winnipeg Police were involved in a disturbing chase on Sunday June 3, 2019 after a motorcycle was seen pulling a lengthy wheelie, also known as a catwalk.

Police say that during cruise night officers observed the driver drive with his front wheel off the ground near Portage Avenue and Cavalier Drive.

Another vehicle appeared to be with the motorcyclist and was also driving erratically.

Police activated their emergency lights in an attempt to pull the drivers over but on seeing police the motorcyclist sped away.

The other driver pulled over and was issued several tickets based his reckless driving.

AIR-1 was quickly able to find the speeding motorcycle and followed it for over 40 minutes while directing ground units.

Speeds reached 180 kilometres as the driver criss crossed the city.

The driver was eventually pulled off his motorcycle by waiting officers as he approached a construction barricade at Foxgrove Avenue and Raleigh Street.

Police have charged the 22-year-old driver with a number of Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act offences including Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer, Drive with improper Licence, Drive without Liability Insurance.

Police say the motorcycle did not have a licence plate and was not insured and the driver did not have a motorcycle licence.

The suspect was released on a promise to appear.
