Winnipeg’s Insect Control Branch (ICB) will begin fogging to control the adult nuisance mosquito population on Sunday August 21 between 9:30pm and 6:30am. High winds, low temperatures and rain will delay fogging operations.
On Thursday the city-wide average count was 73 which is considered a High Adulticiding Factor Analysis (AFA) rating. Prior to yesterday the rating had been at medium with counts in the mid 30s.
In order for a nuisance mosquito fogging program to occur, the City of Winnipeg Adult Nuisance Mosquito Control Policy and the Provincial Pesticide Use Permit define three conditions that must be met:
- The Adulticiding Factor Analysis, which is one city-wide rating, must be HIGH; and
- A minimum city-wide average trap count threshold of 25 female mosquitoes for 2 consecutive nights; and
- One or more of the quadrants of the city are in the range of 100 female adult mosquitoes.
At this time, all of these conditions have been met.
The insecticide Pro Malathion ULV® will be used. The City’s inventory of malathion was recently tested and the stock purchased in 2009 has met the World Health Organization standards for isomalathion content and adult mosquito control can now proceed.
