A sad end to a story that captivated Winnipeggers over the weekend. The moose calf that was wandering around Wildwood, Cresent Park and the University of Manitoba died as it was being transported outside the city.
On Friday, September 8, 2017, a moose was spotted in Wildwood and the weekend search began. Over the next 24 hours, the calf wandered through residential neighbourhoods, swam the Red River, wandered around Cresent Park and finally made it’s way to the University of Manitoba as thousands of football fans were heading to the Banjo Bowl.

Winnipeg police blocked traffic and the start of the annual battle between the Bombers and Roughriders was delayed as police and conservation officers tried to corral the giant youth.
Eventually, the animal was in an area that was safe for conservation officers to fire two tranquillizer darts into the animal. A third dose of the tranquillizer was administered once officers were able to get closer.
On Monday it was learned that the moose did not survive relocation and according to conservation officials the stress the moose was under and the exertion it expelled while running through the city took a toll on the animal and it did not survive transport.
