Millennium Library to reopen on Monday with increased security

The Millennium Library is set to reopen on Monday, January 23, 2023, with additional security measures in place according to the City of Winnipeg.

The library was closed after a 28-year-old man was attacked and killed inside the facility on Sunday, December 11, 2022. Three males aged 14, 15 and 16 have been charged in connection to the homicide.

As of Monday entry to the library will be controlled and patrons will be required to walk through a metal detector.

Along with increased security at the entry, two Winnipeg Police Service officers will be onsite during operating hours along with four additional security guards.

“Millennium Library is an important community facility that draws people downtown to discover, learn, create, and connect,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “It’s important we reopen the library now and reestablish the services that are valued by so many visitors. These interim measures will help ensure staff and patrons feel safe and supported while work continues on the comprehensive security audit.”

The city has also hired a security consultant to undertake a comprehensive risk assessment of the facility.
