The new procedures are being implemented in order to improve safety for staff and patrons says the City of Winnipeg.
“The safety and wellbeing of visitors and staff is a priority at the Winnipeg Public Library,” said Ed Cuddy, Manager of Library Services. “These security enhancements will help keep Millennium Library a safe, open and accessible space that meets the diverse needs of the community.”
Everyone wanting access to the library will be guided to the screening area where they will undergo a bag search. Guests will also be scanned with a handheld metal detector.
The city says that anyone declining the security screening will not be allowed access to the library.
Prohibited items include alcohol, illegal drugs, explosive or flammable items, firearms or replica firearms, blades, sharp objects or striking tools, pepper spray or other aerosol weapons.
The city says that illegal items will be confiscated and may be reported to Winnipeg Police.
