A Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officer was seriously injured after he responded to a disturbance at the gaming centre on Waywayseecappo First Nation in Western Manitoba on Wednesday, May 29, 2019. Waywayseecappo is about 320 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
Investigators say that while in the parking lot of the gaming centre while the officer was attempting to place a suspect under arrest a second man came up and stabbed the officer several times.
The officer fired his sidearm and shot the male who had allegedly stabbed him.
Other MFNPS officers along with RCMP responded to the scene.
The 29-year-old officer and a 21-year-old male were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The officer, a 7 year veteran of the force, was treated and has since been released. The suspect was also treated but remains in hospital in stable condition.
“This is an extremely difficult day for our police service and all police officers across the province. Our thoughts are with the officer and his family,” said Chief Rick Head of Manitoba First Nations Police Services. “It’s a reminder of the very real dangers that our officers face on a daily basis.”
RCMP are investigating the stabbing of the officer.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been called in and has taken over the investigation concerning the police involved shooting.
