Meth user turns to police for help after carjacking a 65-year-old woman

Winnipeg Police have a 33-year-old carjacker in custody after he walked into police station and told them he had used meth and needed help.

Police say that just after 12:00 am on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, they learned of a carjacking in the Burrows Avenue and McPhillips Street area. While a 65-year-old woman was stopped at a traffic light a man jumped into the front passenger seat of her car, grabbed her wrist and told her to drive. The suspect then pulled out a knife.

The victim was then told to drive the man to various streets in the area eventually stopping on Aikins Street near Hartford Avenue. Once the man got out of the vehicle the victim drove out of the area and reported the incident to police.

The suspect then walked to the north district police station and told officers that he had taken methamphetamine and wanted them to take him the Main Street Project. The male was taken to the Health Sciences Centre where he was examined by medical staff. While at the hospital officers found out that the man was the suspect in the carjacking. He was placed under arrest.

Lance William Laquette was charged for his involvement with Kidnapping, Forcible Confinement, Assault with a Weapon and Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

He was taken to the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
