Winnipeg Police have arrested three people and charged them with identity theft related offences.
Just before 4:00 am on Tuesday September 3, 2019, police made a traffic stop in the 3100 block of Portage Avenue. As officers were running a check on the driver one of the male passengers in the vehicle told them that he had found a wallet. The wallet had ID for several different people.
Police say some of the IDs had been reported stolen between May and September. The 44-year-old male was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of an Identity Document X3, Identity Theft X3 and Possession of Forged Document with Intent. He was detained in custody.
A second male in the vehicle told police he had found a credit card. The 37-year-old male was placed in custody and a search of his person located IDs belonging to three different people. The suspect was released on a promise to appear.
Six hours later, around 10:00 am, police were called to Lavenham Crescent for the report of a male in a truck causing a disturbance.
When officers arrived they pulled up behind the truck that was parked in a driveway and activated their siren to get the man’s attention. The suspect put the vehicle in reverse and backed into the police cruiser. Police placed the man under arrest after he exited the truck.
A search of the vehicle uncovered IDs and wallets stolen from several vehicles that had been broken into between July 2012 and August 2019. Police also found the barrel and firing mechanism for a .50 calibre rifle.
