Police warn of mechanic scam targeting female drivers

Winnipeg Police are warning female drivers to be cautious after a suspicious male driver has been targeting women drivers and flagging them to pull over.

Police say that once they pull over he approaches them and the suspect indicates that they have a mechanical problem that needs to be addressed immediately. He then tells the victim that he is a mechanic and can fix the problem on the spot with parts he happens to have with him. Of course, the suspect also wants to be paid and in two instances was given $50 and $90 to make the repairs that were not in fact needed or done.

Some drivers who did not fall for the scam took their vehicles to certified mechanics and were told there were no mechanical concerns with their vehicles.

Police say that being cautious when encountering someone you do not know tries to get your attention or is requesting you to pull over while driving is wise.

If your vehicle needs service or someone tells you it does, police say to take it to a mechanical shop or call a towing company.
