Fire hits same Maryland St. apartment building for 2nd time in a week

Fire crews were called to an apartment building in the 400 block of Maryland Street for the second time in a week.

Firefighters arrived just before 2:30 pm on January 21, 2019, and immediately went into the building to extinguish the blaze. Fire officials say that due to safety concerns, however, crews were pulled out and the fire was attacked from the exterior.

A neighbouring home was also evacuated as a precaution.

The same building was the scene of another fire last week on Monday, January 14, 2019, that saw four people taken to hospital, one in critical condition. More than 40 residents were forced out of their apartments during the fire.

Crews were on scene into the evening and traffic on Ellice and Maryland was blocked.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
