The much-anticipated walleye and sauger fishing season in Manitoba is set to officially open on May 11 in the southern fishing division, according to an announcement made today by Jamie Moses, Minister of Economic Development, Investment, Trade, and Natural Resources.
The season will commence a week later on Lake Winnipeg and in the northwest and north central fishing divisions. “As the weather gets warmer, Manitoba families have the chance to get out and enjoy our beautiful lakes and rivers, with fishing for walleye and sauger opening for the season,” Moses said.
The minister highlighted the enthusiasm of Manitobans and visitors alike for catching walleye, also known as pickerel, one of Manitoba’s most popular fish species.
However, Moses also urged anglers to be mindful of the spawning season. Some fish may still be spawning, and anglers are asked to help protect fish stocks by immediately releasing fish that are discharging eggs.
“By proactively releasing spawning fish, anglers will help protect fish stocks and sustain Manitoba’s fisheries,” Moses noted. He also reminded anglers to be aware of all provincial fishing regulations.
