Manitoba Wildfire Service members honoured by Australia

The state government of New South Wales, Australia have recognized the efforts of Manitoba Wildfire Service members who helped battle wildfires between December 2019 and March 2020.

The Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation recognizes 11 Manitobans for their contributions to the emergency response.

As wildfires spread virtually out of control in Australia, crews from across Canada were called in to help including from Manitoba.

The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre based in Winnipeg co-ordinated a number of deployments to our Aussie neighbours to support firefighting efforts.

Members from Manitoba served in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia and provided help with roles in command, aviation, planning, logistics and operations.

“Manitobans are known the world over for their generous spirit and we were pleased to be able to send staff to support Australia during its time of need,” said Conservation and Climate Minister Sarah Guillemard. “These individuals do not tackle their jobs in the hopes of praise or public adulation, though they certainly deserve our praise, and we welcome the recognition and appreciation from Australia.”
