Manitoba to swear-in first female premier on Tuesday

Heather Stefanson is set to become the first female premier in Manitoba’s history on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, after winning the Progressive Conservative party leadership race on Saturday, October 30, 2021.

Stefanson won the leadership of the party by 363 votes over contender Shelly Glover, a former police officer and member of parliament.

In the days leading up to the counting of ballots, many party members complained that they did not receive ballots in time to mail them back before Saturday’s count.

Glover’s lawyer has asked the Lt. Governor to delay the swearing-in of Stefanson so that Glover can contest the outcome of the leadership race in court.

It is unlikely that the Lt. Governor will grant the request.

Stefanson is scheduled to be sworn in at 2:00 pm tomorrow.

Premier Kelvin Goertzen submitted his resignation letter to the Lt. Governor earlier today effective Tuesday.

In a statement to the media, Goertzen said ” I took on this role for the opportunity to serve within government and to help our province at time of anxiety and uncertainty. It has been my goal to bring calmness and stability to the government during this time of transition as we continue to address the challenges posed by the pandemic, and plan for a strong economic and social recovery.”
