Manitoba setting up border checkpoints due to COVID-19

The province announced on Friday March 27, 2020, that they will be setting up checkpoints at the borders between Manitoba and Saskatchewan and Manitoba and Ontario.

The five checkpoints will be located at:

The Ontario border along the Trans-Canada Highway near West Hawk lake

The Saskatchewan border along the Trans-Canada west of Virden, West of Russell on Highway 16, West of Roblin on Highway 5W and west of Sinclair on Highway 2.

“We must do everything we can to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our communities and on our health-care system,” said Justice Minister Cliff Cullen.  “This approach will help ensure travellers know they must self-isolate, what the province’s state of emergency means to them and other important public health information.  By being informed, we can reduce the risk to Manitobans and help keep our communities healthy and safe.”

The checkpoints will provide travellers with information about the current state of the pandemic in Manitoba including the public health orders issued. Travellers will also be informed about the need to immediately self-isolate for 14 days after travel.

The province says they expect the checkpoints to be up and running within the next week.

The minister noted that no one will be denied entry into Manitoba at the checkpoints.

The province will also be placing signage at the James Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg and at the Brandon Municipal Airport so that travellers who come in through those facilities also receive the same information.
