Manitoba set to join lawsuit against opioid makers

Justice Minister Cliff Cullen announced on Thursday, October 1, 2020, that the Manitoba government has introduced legislation that will allow them to join a class-action lawsuit against opioid manufacturers.

The Opioid Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act will allow the province to join the class action lawsuit launched by British Columbia in August of 2018 and pursue claims in the bankruptcy of Purdue Pharma. More than 40 manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of opioids in Canada have been named in the lawsuit.

“Now it is time for Manitoba to hold these companies to account, by joining other provinces and territories to take on the pharmaceutical companies that have created such significant and ongoing harm,” said Cullen.

Six other provinces have passed similar legislation.
