Manitoba seizes more than 310,000 cigarettes at border with Ontario

A joint operation with multiple law enforcement agencies along the Ontario / Manitoba border has resulted in more than 310,000 contraband cigarettes being confiscated.

Manitoba Finance’s Taxation Special Investigations Unit says that 52 people face a number of charges under the Manitoba’s Tobacco Tax Acts and the criminal code.

Along with the illegal cigarettes officers seized 7,600 grams of fine cut tobacco. Had the cigarettes and tobacco ben sold Manitoba stood to lose more than $97,000 in tax revenue.

Those facing charges could face fines of $1,000 to $10,000 plus up to six months in jail if convicted. They also may be subject to triple the tax penalties.

Two of the people arrested are also facing drug charges. Several Highway Traffic Act offence notices were also issued.
