Manitoba schools set to close for three weeks beginning March 23rd

On Friday March 13, 2020, the government of Manitoba has ordered all elementary and secondary schools to close for three weeks effective Monday, March 23, 2020 in an effort to lessen the spread go COVID-19 in the province.

“We’re taking these measures out of an abundance of caution and we believe they are the right actions to take at this time,” said Premier Brian Pallister.

The one week delay in the school closures is to allow parents to make preparations for students to be off.

Teachers will be expected to be at work during the first and last week of the closures. The middle week was originally scheduled as spring break.

Prior to the government announcement Red River College officials announced that next week they have declared a study week for students.

Brandon University has also made a decision to cancel classes next week.

The University of Winnipeg announced that all in-person classes and labs have been suspended for the remainder of the winter term that was scheduled to end on April 3rd.

The premier said during the media briefing that for now daycares will remain open but he wound not rule out that they may be closed in the future.
