Manitoba Redirects Power Exports for Nation-Building Projects

The Manitoba government has issued a directive to Manitoba Hydro to redirect a significant portion of its electricity exports towards powering nation-building infrastructure projects across Canada, Premier Wab Kinew announced today. The move will see 500 megawatts (MW) of power, freed up from expiring export contracts, being prioritized for projects within Manitoba and other Canadian provinces and territories.

Premier Kinew emphasized Manitoba’s role as a “province of builders” and the opportune timing for inter-provincial collaboration amidst current economic uncertainties. “Manitoba is stepping up to help build our nation as we weather the economic uncertainty we are all facing right now,” stated Premier Kinew. “There is no better time to be partnering with other Canadian provinces and territories to build the infrastructure we need for a strong domestic economy.”

A key project highlighted by the Premier is the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link, a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at bringing reliable power and telecommunications to remote northern communities. As part of the directive, 50 MW of the redirected power has been specifically earmarked for the development of this crucial link. Premier Kinew noted the project’s potential to reduce reliance on diesel fuel in the North and stimulate economic growth by providing power to mining operations and other industries.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from partners involved in the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link. Anne-Raphaëlle Audouin, chief executive officer of Nukik Corporation, lauded the province’s commitment as “true nation building that makes Canada stronger.” She added, “Working together we can unlock sustainable economic development opportunities, build stronger communities and support Arctic sovereignty and security. We look forward to working in partnership to build a more connected Canada.”

The Manitoba government has affirmed its commitment to ongoing engagement with Nunavut, Nukik Corporation, and other stakeholders to further advance the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link. The province also intends to explore additional opportunities for economic development and build upon existing collaborations to foster both cultural and economic growth across the country.
