The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Manitoba has announced the appointment of Assistant Commissioner Scott McMurchy as its new Commanding Officer. Born in Rossburn, Manitoba, and raised in The Pas, McMurchy brings a wealth of local knowledge and a deep commitment to his home province.
With a distinguished career spanning 34 years in the RCMP, McMurchy has served in various roles in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. His experience includes postings in several detachments, Provincial Support Services, Serious and Organized Crime, and District Operations for Manitoba North District. He has also served as the Officer in Charge of Community and Indigenous Policing Services, and most recently, as the Officer in Charge of Criminal Operations for Manitoba.
“As Manitoba is my home, I am deeply committed to serving Manitobans and am very honoured to be the Commanding Officer of the Manitoba RCMP,” McMurchy said. “I am proud that much of my service has been in Manitoba. I believe that the opportunity for varied experience in this province exceeds almost anywhere else.”
McMurchy’s top priority is addressing violent crime, a concern shared by communities across the province. He is committed to reducing the level of violent crime and engaging the community in the process. “Our goal is always the safety and security of Manitobans, and we want them to feel safe in their communities,” he stated.
Recognizing the link between drug subculture and rising property crime, McMurchy plans to tackle these issues through drug enforcement and education, specialized teams, integrated units, and intelligence-led policing.
McMurchy also emphasized the importance of building relationships, particularly with Indigenous leadership. “As part of the Manitoba RCMP’s Reconciliation journey, I plan to continue wholeheartedly making those connections and listening to those perspectives,” he said.
As the provincial police, the RCMP is keen to hear from Manitobans about their community concerns. McMurchy encouraged residents to communicate their priorities to local leaders, who meet regularly with RCMP Detachment Commanders.
Despite the challenges ahead, McMurchy remains optimistic and committed. He looks forward to serving alongside the dedicated employees of the RCMP to ensure the safety and security of all Manitobans. In his downtime, he hopes to enjoy the natural beauty of Manitoba, stating, “If I’m in a boat on the water, I’m happy.”
