Manitobans and visitors can enjoy free ice fishing across the province during the upcoming Winter Family Fishing Weekend, set for February 15-17. Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures Minister Ian Bushie made the announcement today, encouraging everyone to take advantage of this opportunity.
“This is a great opportunity to experience ice fishing and participate in a recreational activity that continues to grow in popularity each year,” said Bushie. “Whether you are new to fishing or an experienced angler, this is an excellent time to gather family and friends on the ice and try catching one of the many diverse fish species found in our province.”
During the designated weekend, anglers can fish without a license, with the exception of national parks, where a federal angling license is still required. However, all other regulations, including possession limits and size restrictions, remain in effect and anglers are responsible for knowing and adhering to the rules for the specific waters they are fishing. Minister Bushie emphasized the importance of safety during ice fishing. Anglers are urged to check ice conditions before venturing out, dress appropriately for the weather, and inform someone of their fishing location.
The free fishing weekend coincides with free entry to provincial parks throughout February. While vehicle permits are not required this month, Snopasses are still necessary for snowmobiles using groomed trails within the parks.
