As winter settles over Manitoba, the province’s Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures department is urging ice fishers and outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution and ensure safety before venturing onto the ice.
With temperatures fluctuating, ice conditions can be unpredictable, particularly in southern Manitoba where ice is still forming and may be dangerously thin. Officials emphasize that ice thickness can vary significantly from one location to another, making it crucial for individuals to verify ice conditions regularly.
“While some areas may appear to have sufficient ice, it’s important to remember that conditions can change rapidly,” a spokesperson stated. “Checking ice thickness and safety before crossing is essential.”
The department also highlighted several key safety measures:
- Wear appropriate winter clothing.
- Inform someone of your plans, including your expected return time.
- Always carry a communication device for emergencies.
