Manitoba Mother Arrested at Toronto Airport in Alleged Parental Abduction

A 45-year-old woman from the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie has been arrested on charges of parental abduction after allegedly attempting to leave the country with her two daughters, aged 12 and 8.

The incident unfolded on Thursday, January 23, 2025, when Steinbach RCMP received a report at 7:00 p.m. from the children’s father, a 47-year-old man also from the RM of La Broquerie. He reported that his daughters, who were supposed to be picked up at school by him, were missing. Concerned for their safety, he informed authorities that he believed his wife had taken the children and was attempting to flee the country.

An immediate investigation revealed that the mother and her two daughters were last seen at Winnipeg International Airport around 1:20 p.m. Surveillance footage and flight records confirmed that they had boarded a flight bound for Toronto.

Steinbach RCMP coordinated with the Peel Regional Police Service to locate the trio. Shortly before 8:00 p.m., officers at Toronto Pearson International Airport intercepted the mother and her children as they attempted to board a flight destined for Turkey.

The woman was taken into police custody on charges of parental abduction. Authorities are arranging for her transport back to Manitoba, where she will face court proceedings. The two children have been placed into care and will be safely returned to Manitoba.
