The Manitoba government today announced a $3.3 million investment in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to bolster the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) in rural and northern Manitoba. The funding will allow for a doubling of the team’s size, adding nine new regular RCMP members to the existing nine, bringing the total to 18 full-time officers.
Justice Minister Matt Wiebe unveiled the initiative, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Manitobans, regardless of their location.
Wiebe said, “By investing to expand the RCMP Emergency Response Team, police will have the resources they need to keep Manitobans safe, regardless of where you live in our province. I’m pleased to work with the RCMP to get more boots on the ground to tackle these senseless crimes.”
The expanded ERT will possess a range of specialized skills and training crucial for addressing the unique challenges of policing in rural and northern environments. This includes expertise in rural tracking operations, managing incidents involving armed individuals, conducting high-risk searches and arrests, and executing serious crime arrest warrants.
Kathy Valentino, president of The Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) said, “With rising crime and repeat prolific offenders facing little accountability, this support is a critical step toward safer communities and ensuring all Manitobans feel secure – no matter where they live.”
The expansion of the RCMP Emergency Response Team is anticipated to provide a significant boost to law enforcement capabilities in rural and northern Manitoba, offering greater security and peace of mind to residents and communities. The full complement of 18 full-time members will be strategically deployed to ensure comprehensive coverage across the vast and diverse regions of the province.
