Manitoba Invests $13 Million in Downtown Winnipeg to Establish Global Agriculture Technology Exchange

The Manitoba government a $13 million investment to establish the Global Agriculture Technology Exchange (Gate), a state-of-the-art centre in downtown Winnipeg spearheaded by Cereals Canada. Premier Wab Kinew, along with Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation Minister Jamie Moses and Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn, unveiled the initiative, highlighting its potential to bolster the province’s agricultural sector and create new international trading partnerships for grain producers and processors.

Premier Kinew emphasized the critical role of agriculture in Manitoba’s economy, stating, “Agriculture is the backbone of Manitoba’s economy and this investment will protect jobs as farmers and producers are facing a trade war on two fronts. This new exchange will help showcase Manitoba’s grains to the world and help drive up global demand for high-quality Canadian grain products.”

Minister Moses echoed this sentiment, adding, “We’re working with Cereals Canada to drive innovation and provide their technical expertise to help bring more investments to Manitoba. This partnership will protect Manitoba jobs and deliver opportunities for long-term growth in Manitoba.”

The $13 million in funding will be directed towards the construction and equipping of a new facility in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District. This world-class centre will feature research and innovation spaces for specialty milling, a pilot bakery, and pasta extrusion. It will also include essential training and office spaces.

Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn underscored Canada’s global advantage in grain quality. “Canada produces some of the highest quality grains in the world and that gives us a unique advantage. Retaining Cereals Canada in Winnipeg will solidify Manitoba as the centre of the Canadian grains industry and a hub for global trade.”

Dean Dias, CEO of Cereals Canada, hailed the investment as crucial for the future of the Canadian cereals industry. “This is a substantial investment from the Manitoba government for the future of Canadian cereals. Gate is an essential investment in diversifying our markets and mitigating trade risk, providing global buyers with trusted technical knowledge and expertise, and maintaining Canada’s leadership as a trusted and consistent supplier of high-quality cereal grains.”
