Manitoba Hydro Customers to See Significant Bill Reduction as Federal Carbon Charge Removed

Manitoba Hydro natural gas customers will welcome a change in their upcoming bills: the removal of the Federal Carbon Charge, effective April 1st. The change, announced by the federal government earlier this month and subsequently authorized by the Public Utilities Board, will provide significant relief to approximately 298,000 natural gas customers across the province.

The Federal Carbon Charge, which was implemented in 2019 and has steadily increased over the years, will no longer be applied to natural gas consumption after the April 1st deadline. In 2024, a typical Manitoba household paid approximately $338 in carbon charges on their natural gas bill.

The removal of the charge follows a federal government announcement and subsequent approval from the Public Utilities Board, allowing Manitoba Hydro to discontinue collecting the levy on behalf of the federal government.

Customers should note that the Federal Carbon Charge will still apply to any natural gas consumed before April 1st, and these charges will be reflected in the next billing cycle.

Manitoba Hydro has also issued a notice regarding potential confusion arising from its “Energy Matters Newsletter,” which may contain outdated information about a previously scheduled carbon charge increase for April 1st. Customers receiving paper bills with this newsletter are advised to disregard the information concerning the planned increase.
