Manitoba Government Tackles Hate Crimes with New Prosecutor Appointment

The Manitoba government has announced decisive measures to combat hate crimes, designating a lead provincial Crown prosecutor to address the issue, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe revealed today.

“Hate has no place in our province,” said Wiebe. “We’re protecting families and the democratic freedoms we value. We want Manitobans from all walks of life to know their government is going to show up for them.”

The Manitoba Prosecution Service already has a hate crime working group providing expertise and guidance in hate crime prosecutions. Now, the service will appoint a lead Crown attorney to coordinate this group’s efforts, with new terms of reference currently being drafted.

Wiebe highlighted the complexity and community impact of hate crimes prosecutions, noting that between 2017 and 2022, Winnipeg experienced 178 police-reported hate-motivated crimes. In 2022, there were 3,576 such incidents nationwide.

To further support these efforts, the Manitoba government plans to offer specialized training for Crown attorneys to enhance their expertise in prosecuting hate crimes.
