The Manitoba government announced a $72 million investment to expand the Park Manor Personal Care Home in Winnipeg’s Transcona neighbourhood. The expansion will add 90 private beds to the facility, addressing the current situation where many seniors reside in semi-private or four-bed rooms.
Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the government’s commitment to seniors, stating, “Manitoba’s seniors built our province…now it’s our turn to take care of them. Today’s investment is a signal to seniors and their loved ones in Transcona: more care is coming your way.”
Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of ensuring seniors can age with dignity. “Adding 90 beds at Park Manor will not only increase access to care for seniors in Transcona, but will expand capacity throughout the system, bringing more care across the province,” Asagwara said. The minister also noted that the project will begin this year.
Abednigo Mandalupa, CEO of Park Manor Personal Care Home, expressed gratitude for the investment, stating, “Park Manor Care has always been a place of pride for the Transcona community. As one of the only care homes in the area, we are so glad that the provincial government is finally coming to the table to see this project through.” Mandalupa acknowledged the years of advocacy by community members, management, staff, residents, and their families to update the facility.
The government also highlighted other initiatives aimed at improving seniors’ care in Manitoba, including the construction of a new personal care home in Lac du Bonnet, the addition of nearly 300 healthcare aides to boost home care appointments, and the passage of the Senior’s Advocate Act.
