Manitoba Government Invests $13.6M in Fire Protection and Safety

The Manitoba government is bolstering its commitment to community safety by investing over $13.6 million in 16 projects aimed at enhancing fire protection and preparedness for the upcoming wildfire season. The announcement was made today by Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie.

The investment, which supports the capacity of rural municipalities, Northern Affairs, and First Nation communities to respond to fires, is a critical step in building community resilience to environmental emergencies and unforeseen events. “Investing in infrastructure that supports fire protection and safety is critical to building community resilience to environmental emergencies and unforeseen events,” said Minister Bushie.

The funding will be allocated through the Strategic Municipal Investment Fund and the Northern Affairs Fund. It will support 16 critical infrastructure projects that will expand and enhance local capacity to respond to on-the-ground emergencies and wildfires.

The approved projects for 2024 include fire station replacements, fire hall upgrades, fire truck purchases, and fire equipment for Northern Affairs Communities across various municipalities. These investments align with Manitoba’s definition of strategic infrastructure, which includes water and wastewater treatment plants, waste management facilities, public transit, roads and bridges, public safety, and recreation projects.

Mayor Myron Dyck of the Town of Niverville expressed gratitude for the investment, noting that “fire protection is more important than ever” in the province’s fastest-growing municipality. Similarly, Mike Chudd, Fire Chief of Gimli Fire and Rescue, thanked Minister Bushie and the Manitoba government for their support, stating that the funding for a new platform fire truck will “help better protect our community and keep our firefighters and citizens safe.”

The Manitoba government will continue to prioritize efforts that mitigate risks and enhance the province’s community fire prevention and resilience against wildfires. This includes collaborating with Indigenous communities and municipalities to ensure the safety of all Manitobans.
