Manitoba Government Introduces Buy Canadian Act

The Manitoba government has unveiled proposed amendments to the Government Purchases Act, signaling a significant shift towards prioritizing Canadian suppliers in provincial procurement. The move, announced today, aims to bolster the local economy and support Canadian businesses.

The core of the proposed changes lies in the establishment of a formal “Buy Canadian” policy across all government departments. This policy would mandate that, when purchasing goods under the authority of the Government Purchases Act, preferential treatment may be given to Canadian suppliers.

While details of the specific criteria are yet to be released, the government emphasized that the policy would focus on supporting Canadian manufacturers, producers, and service providers.

The move comes at a time when governments across Canada are increasingly focusing on supporting domestic industries in the face of United States of America Tariffs.
