The Manitoba government has announced a significant boost in funding for its winter road system, with an investment of $11.3 million, marking a $1.8 million increase from the previous year. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor made the announcement today, emphasizing the critical role that these roads play in providing access to northern communities and ensuring the delivery of essential goods.
“Winter roads are a lifeline for many northern communities and increasing our investment in their construction emphasizes our government’s recognition of their importance,” said Naylor. “Many families use these roads to re-supply, access health-care services, and run their businesses. Our government remains committed to ensuring the growth and success of these communities.”
The increased funding will specifically support the construction of a winter road from St. Theresa Point to Berens River, significantly reducing the travel time required to deliver vital supplies to these remote areas.
Manitoba’s winter road system comprises temporary routes designed to provide access to remote northern communities. These roads enable residents to receive essential items such as fuel, building materials, food supplies, and various goods and services. Depending on weather conditions, the winter road network is typically open from late January to mid-March, with the majority of the network already open for traffic.
Serving more than 30,000 Manitobans in 22 communities, the winter road system facilitates over 3,000 shipments of goods annually. It also provides residents with temporary inter-community travel and road access to the rest of the province. The extensive network spans over 2,356 kilometres and traverses a variety of terrains, including muskeg, streams, rivers, and lakes.
Minister Naylor noted that timelines for the completion of all roads depend on weather conditions, and some sections of the winter road system may be closed for repairs on short notice due to changing weather conditions.
This investment underscores the Manitoba government’s commitment to supporting the growth and success of northern communities by enhancing their access to essential services and goods.
