In response to growing concerns over retail theft, violence, and public disorder, the Manitoba Government announced on May 29, 2024, temporary funding for police overtime. The move aims to enhance safety and security for retailers and community members who have been increasingly alarmed by the surge in retail crime and its impact on the community.
Throughout June, uniform officers from the Winnipeg Police Service’s General Patrol divisions collaborated with detectives from the Major Crimes Division and members of the Community Relations Division. Their joint efforts were part of a one-month Violent Crime and Retail Theft (VCRT) initiative designed to reduce crime, apprehend offenders, and educate retailers and community members.
The initiative saw a visible police presence in several areas across the city, including Osborne Village, the Exchange District, and the West End.
The first four weeks of the initiative, from June 8 to July 5, yielded significant results. The collaborative efforts of Patrol members, Investigational Resources – PCU, and the Community Relations Division led to:
- 203 arrests
- 1,113 storefront engagements
- 484 individual engagements
- 610 Community Division Crime Prevention engagements
- Recovery of merchandise valued at over $8,800
- Issuance of 31 tickets under the Provincial Offence Act
Encouraged by the strong community response, the Province has decided to extend the initiative throughout the summer. This extension underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and businesses.
