Manitoba Government Cracks Down on Money Laundering in Casinos

The Manitoba government has announced new measures to combat money laundering in the province’s casinos, Premier Wab Kinew and Justice Minister Matt Wiebe revealed today. The initiative aims to enhance the detection and reporting of suspicious transactions, particularly those linked to drug trafficking.

“Drug dealers often use casinos to launder their cash, and we are making it easier for law enforcement to track down people bringing toxic drugs into our communities,” said Premier Kinew. “Fentanyl has had a devastating impact on Manitobans, and people attempting to profit off it need to be held accountable.”

Under the new directive, casinos operated by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries (MBLL) will be required to report suspicious transaction records directly to the Winnipeg Police Service, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC). This practice aligns with similar measures already in place in Ontario and British Columbia.

“Our government has been cracking down on drug traffickers since day one,” stated Justice Minister Wiebe. “Today’s announcement adds another layer of protection for Manitobans against money laundering.”

To support this initiative, MBLL will strengthen its anti-money laundering team by hiring additional staff and acquiring new equipment. The organization will also collaborate with FINTRAC to improve information sharing with provincial agencies. Furthermore, the Manitoba government is investing $325,000 in surveillance equipment for MBLL.

These measures are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard communities from the harmful effects of drug trafficking and to ensure that those who engage in illegal activities are brought to justice.
