The latest report from Statistics Canada shows that employment numbers are bouncing back as the economy reopens amid COVID-19.
In May Manitoba showed an increase of 13,100 jobs. 10,000 of those were part-time while 3,100 were full-time positions.
“Last month, we saw historic declines in Manitoba’s employment numbers as the COVID-19 pandemic affected the global economy,” said Finance Minister Scott Fielding. “Now, as Manitoba slowly and safely reopens for business and restores services, our job market is beginning to rebound as Manitobans return to work and revive the economy.”
Manitoba began to allow businesses across the province to reopen on May 4, 2020 following six weeks of closures and restrictions on how businesses operate during the pandemic.
Currently the unemployment rate in Manitoba is sitting at 11.2 per cent which is below the national average of 13.7 per cent.
The largest increase in employment was in the wholesale and retail industry.
