Manitoba to allow driverless vehicles on highways

Manitoba is set to amend the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) to allow driverless vehicles on roadways in the province.

According to Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler proposed amendments to the HTA will be brought forward that would allow autonomous vehicles for testing of the technology.

“The rapid technological advances being achieved by carmakers in regards to autonomous vehicles must be met by legislation allowing for their use in our province,” said Schuler.  “We will meet those challenges and seize the opportunities relating to autonomous vehicles by bringing forward these proposed amendments.”

Although the HTA amendments would only allow for testing of autonomous vehicles the ultimate goal is to develop regulations that would allow for high-level automated vehicles on the roads in the future.
