A water bomber from Newfoundland and Labrador and 13 firefighters from Minnesota have been called in by Manitoba under the resource-sharing agreement the province has with other jurisdictions.
The crews and equipment were requested to help fight wildfires. So far this season there have been 443 fires in Manitoba. Fires are also burning in Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC and the Northwest Territories.
Officials say that smoke for all these fires may drift into various parts of the province causing smoky conditions over the weekend.
Manitoba Sustainable Development reminds people that open burning is only allowed with a permit between April 1 and November 15. Hot dry weather has elevated the risk of wildfire in many areas.
If you are heading out into the backcountry campfires should only be made in designated fire pits. The province suggests that a better idea to a campfire for cooking is using a portable cook stove.
If you see a wildfire call 911 or the forest fire tip line at 800-782-0076 (free call)
