Manitoba Boosts Tourism with $4.5 Million Investment

The Manitoba government is injecting $4.5 million into Travel Manitoba to bolster tourism across the province, with a significant portion dedicated to showcasing Indigenous experiences, Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Nellie Kennedy announced today.

Minister Kennedy emphasized the vital role tourism plays in Manitoba’s vibrancy and economy. “Tourism is a key part of what makes Manitoba such a dynamic place to live, work and visit,” she stated. “With this significant investment, our government recognizes the importance of tourism and the role it plays in the economic well-being of our beautiful province. Travel Manitoba has a track record of success in growing tourism in ways that benefit all Manitobans.”

Of the total funding, 10 percent, or $450,000, has been specifically earmarked for Indigenous Tourism Manitoba, highlighting the province’s commitment to promoting and supporting Indigenous-led tourism initiatives.

The minister highlighted the substantial economic impact of tourism, noting that it contributes $373 million in provincial tax revenues. These funds, she explained, are crucial for investments in essential public services such as infrastructure, health care, and education. Furthermore, the tourism sector is a significant employer in Manitoba, responsible for over 25,000 jobs.

Colin Ferguson, president and CEO of Travel Manitoba, welcomed the investment, stating, “Investments in tourism are investments in Manitobans. Manitoba is home to incredible heart-stirring tourism experiences that attract travellers from across the country and around the world. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, travel not only creates unforgettable memories but also supports businesses, jobs and investment in communities throughout Manitoba.”

The impact of tourism is felt province-wide. In 2023, Manitoba welcomed an impressive 10.4 million visitors who contributed $1.82 billion to the local economy.

Beyond the economic benefits, Minister Kennedy also underscored the social and cultural significance of tourism. “Tourism benefits Manitobans beyond dollars and cents,” she said. “Festivals, major events and local attractions provide spaces for residents to connect, celebrate and engage with their communities. Cultural experiences highlight Manitoba’s rich and diverse heritage, while the province’s vast natural landscapes, wildlife and world-class fishing give locals and visitors alike the opportunity to explore and appreciate its beauty.”
