In a direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump‘s recently imposed tariffs, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announced On Sunday, February 2, 2025, that the province will stop the sale of American alcohol products in all Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries (MBLL) outlets.
“Trump’s tariff tax is an attack on Canadians,” said Kinew. “We support the federal response to these tariffs and here in Manitoba, we’re stopping the sale of American products at Manitoba liquor marts. How you choose to spend your money is one of the most important decisions you as a consumer can make. There are plenty of great Manitoba breweries and distilleries to support instead.”
Beginning Tuesday, February 4th, MBLL has been directed to remove all American alcohol products from shelves and halt any further orders effectively taking $80 million out of the U.S. economy. The Premier indicated that this is just the first step in the province’s response, with additional support measures for Manitoba businesses and workers to be unveiled throughout the week.
The province’s U.S. Trade Council will convene on Monday to thoroughly assess the impact of the tariffs and formulate a comprehensive strategy for Manitoba.
