Manitoba announces infrastructure and highway improvements

The Manitoba government announced on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, that they will be making a number of investments to improve infrastructure across the province.

Premier Brian Pallister revealed which projects will be funded as part of the $500 million Manitoba Restart Program originally announced on May 7, 2020. This amount is in addition to the $3 billion announced in Budget 2020.

$230 million has been earmarked  for the provincial share of projects under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, a cost-sharing, application-based program with the federal government. $150 million will be used to resurface highways in the province while $50 million will go to the Water Services Board to address water and sewer projects.

$65 million will be used for major projects that will improve safety of highways.

$5 million will be spent on municipal law enforcement priorities including local jails to alleviate pressure on the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

As part of the Budget 2020 infrastructure funding, Pallister announced a $91 million construction project to improve the Trans-Canada Highway in several locations across the province. $2.5 million more will be spent on the planting of trees to create and restore shelterbelts. Approximately 20,000 new trees and shrubs will be used in the shelterbelt project

“Investments in Highway 1 help ensure the safe and continued movement of people and economic goods across the province. We are also rejuvenating and planting additional shelterbelts to help improve safety and reduce road closures between Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg,” said Pallister.
