Manitoba amends interprovincial travel restrictions

Effective Friday, January 29, 2021, anyone entering Manitoba from anywhere in Canada will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

The amended public health orders were announced by Premier Brian Pallister at a media conference on Tuesday afternoon.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are implementing more formal travel restrictions to protect Manitobans from the risks of COVID-19 being introduced to us further by travel including any new COVID-19 strains from other jurisdictions,” said Pallister.

The current restrictions allowed travel from northern and Western Canada and areas west of Terrace Bay, Ontario without the need to self-isolate.

Current exemptions will remain in effect for those travelling for essential interprovincial work. People travelling for medical reasons are also exempted from the self-isolation requirements. People who regularly travel to and from communities near the borders for essential purposes also continue to be exempt.

“Let me be clear – Manitobans should not be traveling, either internationally, interprovincially or within our province except for essential reasons. This will help reduce the spread of COVID-19, including cases of new variants, which have been found in other provinces,” said Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer.

Manitobans who are currently outside the province must return no later than 11:59 pm on Thursday, January 28, 2021 to avoid having to self-isolate.
