The Manitoba government announced on Friday, February 7, 2025, that it has surpassed its target of hiring 1,000 net-new health-care workers. According to the province 1,255 positions have been added to the system since April 2024.
“We made an ambitious promise to Manitobans to hire 1,000 net-new people into the health system and today we’re proud to say we’ve exceeded that goal,” said Premier Wab Kinew. “While the work is underway toward fixing health care, these steps that we’re taking are showing results. We’re keeping our word to you, but there’s still a lot more work to be done.”
The new hires include 138 physicians, 481 nurses, 386 health-care aides, and 176 allied health professionals. The government highlighted the impact of these additions, citing a 45 percent reduction in mandatory overtime for nurses within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) between October 2023 and October 2024.
“Every new health-care worker means better health care for you and your family,” said Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara. “It’s going to take time but we are on the road to recovery. The future is bright for health care in Manitoba.”
The government also announced enhancements to the travel nurse team in partnership with the Manitoba Nurses Union, offering nurses more flexibility within the public system.
126 institutional safety officer (ISO) positions have also been funded, with 96 currently filled. The province has also partnered with Long Plain First Nation to employ First Nation safety officers at Portage District General Hospital, similar to the ISO model in other facilities.
