Manitoba School Boards Association (MSBA) is considering asking the provincial government to make vaccinations mandatory for school-aged children.
In a motion put forward by the Brandon School Division, the association will consider on Friday, March 16, 2018, whether to ask the province to mandate vaccinations for nine illnesses including diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, whooping cough and chicken pox.
As part of the motion, there would be an exemption for those who could not get vaccinated due to an allergy or medical condition.
In Manitoba vaccination is voluntary but the most recent statistics show that six out of 10 children aged seven have received all the vaccine doses required.
Only New Brunswick and Ontario require mandatory vaccinations for school-aged children.
The province has said that although they are working to increase vaccination levels that are not currently looking at implementing any legislation to mandate them.
