Province to consult on mandatory training for truck drivers

Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler announced on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, that the government will be consulting with industry and other stakeholders about mandatory entry-level training (MELT) for truck drivers.

“Mandatory entry-level training is something that would have broad impacts across sectors including transportation, infrastructure and agriculture,” Schuler added.  “We want to hear from Manitobans and ensure this proposed change focuses on safety in collaboration with industry.”

manitoba began the process of MELT in April of this year with consultations with Manitoba Education and Training and Manitoba Public Insurance along with western partners to establish a foundation for driver training of class one vehicles.

Manitoba Infrastructure is interested in hearing from the industry about training standards and approaches to out-of-province drivers coming to Manitoba as well as the scope of individuals who will require training.

The meetings will take place the second week of January 2019 in Winnipeg and Brandon.
